Aspiring law student spends a week with Gibson Kerr

30th June 2023 by Vittoria Quattrone Posted Under: Careers in Law

Aspiring law student?

Our guest blog is written by Vittoria Quattrone, an aspiring law student at George Heriots. Vittoria recently spent a week in our Edinburgh office finding out more about being a solicitor. Thank you Vittoria!

Why spend a week at Gibson Kerr

As a student who wants to study law in the future, I was keen to spend a week at Gibson Kerr. I thought it would be a great experience and an opportunity to learn more about a typical day in the workplace. I worked with the Personal and Property Law departments, learning many new interesting things over the course of my week. Everyone was extremely welcoming and explained every task I had to complete clearly, making it easier to achieve. Here is a rundown of what I did during the week I spent at Gibson Kerr.

Monday:

On Monday, I was welcomed by Morag. She gave me a tour of the workplace and explained the main points about working at Gibson Kerr.  I worked in the Property department with Nikki and Donald, and filed some accounts on recent purchases. The Property team were very kind and taught me some interesting things about what exactly happens when selling a home.

Tuesday:

On Tuesday, I reviewed some recent sale and purchase files. This gave me a better understanding of the more detailed steps involved in these processes. It was all very interesting. I also learned the importance of client confidentiality and GDPR.

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, I moved on to work more closely with the Personal Law team who were all very welcoming. Kirstie helped me learn a lot about Power of Attorneys. With some help from the team I also managed to draft one.

Thursday:

On Thursday, I attended a meeting about a Power of Attorney with Susie. I took some notes about the main details that were discussed in the meeting. Next, I drafted a Will and learned how to generate letters on the client management system. I then attended a departmental meeting where the main updates in the Personal Law department were discussed.

What did I take from my week at Gibson Kerr?

I certainly enjoyed my week at Gibson Kerr. It was an excellent opportunity to complete some engaging tasks and meet new people. This great experience has helped me get a better idea of what I want to do and achieve in the future.

Everyone at Gibson Kerr wishes Vittoria every success in her studies and future career.
